Seller's Description

Hello there and welcome to this listing,

Here I have for sale a very nice rare sought after STEEL AND BRASS CONSTRUCTION original 1860's mid Victorian 1 lever HEAVY DUTY warded RIGHT HANDED mid Victorian era horizontal Mortice Lock and 1 working NON ORIGINAL key which HAS SOME WOBBLE but still works the lock perfectly with a very nice and solid click action due to it's strong spring loaded single lever design.

VERY IMPORTANT - BUYER TO NOTE THAT THE CATCH BOLT ON THIS LOCK IS FOR A RIGHT HANDED DOOR ONLY AND IS **NOT REVERSIBLE**  SO THIS LOCK WON'T BE SUITABLE IF YOU INTEND TO USE IT ON A LEFT HANDED DOOR. PLEASE SEE LAST PHOTO IN THIS LISTING FOR ILLUSTRATION OF LEFT AND RIGHT HAND DOORS FOR MORE INFORMATION BEFORE YOU BUY THIS GREAT ANTIQUE LOCK.

BUYER TO TAKE NOTE THAT THE KEEPER PLATE OF THIS LOCK IS STEEL AND NOT BRASS, PLEASE ONLY BUY THIS LOCK IF YOU ARE OKAY WITH THIS.  THANK YOU.

This lock is from my personal antique lock collection and is a mid Victorian Heavy Gauge 1 Lever WARDED horizontal mortice door lock of a very popular English Georgian/Victorian design, It is in perfect working order and still looks really fabulous ! despite its age ! This is now a rare much sought after item in this great condition.

It is a rare and high quality well made mid Victorian period mortice lock which has been very well engineered to last !

TIP:  If you are having problems getting the lock to sit flush with the door... Always use a small block of wood (to protect the lock from damage) and a hammer, to gently tap the lock face plate flush with the door so that it sits flush with the surrounding wood.

Again, This lock in very good condition for its age but being an USED, old original lock it may show some obvious signs of use and wear which only adds to its original character! so please bare this in mind before you decide to buy this great ultra rare quality lock and study all the photographs very carefully as they show the actual lock that you will receive and the over all condition that it is in including any marks or imperfections it has being an old original lock that is now around 160 years old.

There is also a thick STEEL keeper plate (striking plate) and 4 brass fixing screws included with this lock.

Again just to clarify that the keeper plate with this lock is STEEL and not brass, even though my camera makes it look like it is brass when it is mild STEEL !

This lock has 1 lever plus SOME internal warding and is a fairly secure lock.

The warding means that this lock has an internal "obstruction" (pieces of metal inside of the keyhole called warding) which the key MUST have the same corresponding profile cut out so that the key is able to turn and get past this "obstruction" (whatever warding that is inside this lock), if the key does not have the same sort of cutout which corresponds with this internal warding then the key will simply NOT TURN in this lock. Buyer to note that the key supplied works the lock perfectly - Caution - NEVER FORCE THE KEY if it doesn't fit your other door locks, you could do more damage than good, Just accept that the key does not fit your other doors and let it go !

It is ideal mainly for internal doors where security and home insurance is not an issue, For external doors, I recommend using an BS insurance approved 5 lever deadlock mortice lock (or a Yale barrel lock) along side this lock to get round the insurance issue if you want to use this lock for a front door of a Victorian or Georgian property to add an all important original feature that might be missing or broken.

However if desired, this lock may be used on an external door along with an additional Yale cylinder type barrel lock or a 5 lever mortice dead lock which is BS insurance approved for added security and insurance cover.

Measurements for this lock are below:

Size of lock face: 123 mm high by 24 mm wide by 4 mm in depth.

Size of lock body or lock case: 146 mm long (this is excluding the 4 mm thickness of the thick front brass face plate) and the lock case is approx 81 mm high by 15 mm thick.

Total depth of this lock is 150 mm. (this is including the 4 mm thickness of the thick front shiny brass face plate)

The measurement from the front face of this lock to the center of the key hole is 58 mm.

The measurement from the front face of this lock to the center of the door handle (or door knob) spindle hole is 132 mm.

The measurements of the keeper plate (striking plate) are 106.5 mm high by 24 mm wide (at its narrowest point) and 40 mm wide (at its widest point) which includes the length of the keep plate tongue/lip which guides the lock catch bolt smoothly into the keeper plate or striking plate hole without it damaging the door frame ! The thickness of the keeper plate (or striking plate) is approx 2.5 mm thick mild steel.

The total length of the key is 118 mm (4 inches and 3/4 in long)

PLEASE STUDY ALL 15 PHOTOS as they form a very big part of the DESCRIPTION in this listing and they show any imperfections that this lock may have as well as they show some of the most relevant measurements that are needed.

I have described this item to the best of my knowledge and this lock is in full working order and in good used condition.
