Seller's Description
Hi there, Welcome to this listing,
Here I have for sale a really fabulous, very hard to find STEEL AND BRASS CONSTRUCTION original Victorian 4 lever HEAVY GAUGE Hobbs & Co London Mortice Lock with 6 working keys !!!
Yes !!... You read that bit right !...This lock has 6 NEWER working keys which all work the lock perfectly from both sides with a nice smooth action.
Please note that the keys are modern and NOT the original Hobbs & Co keys for this lock but they still do the job very well.
Also the two stainless steel screws that secure the brass face plate to this lock are NEW SCREWS as the original screws were badly rusted/seized.
This lock is from my personal vintage lock collection, It is a rare early 4 lever mortice deadlock lock. it dates from the around the 1880's era and was removed from the front door of a large Victorian house that had been converted into 6 self contained flats, hence the 6 keys for each tenant to enter the building via the main front door.
USED - SUPERB CONDITION - PERFECT WORKING ORDER - LOVELY POLISHED BRASS WORK - 6 WORKING NEW KEYS !!! - YES !! YOU READ RIGHT ! THIS LOCK HAS 6 WORKING KEYS !!! - ORIGINAL LARGER VICTORIAN RARE EARLY 4 LEVER HEAVY GAuGE STEEL AND BRASS HIGH SECURITY MORTICE DEAD LOCK IN FIRST CLASS CONDITION.
This great vintage lock is from my personal vintage lock collection and is now a collectors item due to its vintage age and rarity. It is in near mint condition for its staggering age !
It would suit a Victorian house very well to add that nice graceful period feature that may be missing or not working in your Victorian home ! - This lock is just the very thing if you are a landlord who owns a Victorian building and has multiple tenants that need use the same front door to access the building.
This lock looks really good.. but being an old and original lock it still shows signs of age and many years of use as to be expected with such an old original lock that is now 130+ years old.
Again, This lock in very good condition for its vintage age but being an USED, old original lock it does show some obvious signs of use and has some wear marks to the side of the face plate and the steel deadbolt which only adds to its original character ! so please bare this in mind before you decide to buy this great ultra rare high quality Victorian period heavy gauge 4 lever mortice dead lock and study all the photographs very carefully as they show the actual lock that you will receive and the over all condition that it is in.
There is also a brass keeper plate (striking plate) and 6 brass fixing screws included with this lock.
This lock has 4 secure levers and is still a pretty secure lock as Hobbs & Co were a well known English lock maker that manufactured high quality and secure locks and safes just like Chubb & Sons of the same era.
Measurements for this lock are below:
Size of lock face: 145 mm high by 29 mm wide by 7mm in depth.
Size of lock body or lock case: 98 mm long (this is excluding the 7 mm thickness of the thick front steel lock plate and the shiny brass face plate) and the lock case is approx 90 mm high by 17 mm thick.
Total depth of this lock is approx 105 mm. (this is including the 7 mm thickness of the thick front steel lock plate and the shiny brass face plate)
The measurement from the front face of this lock to the center of the key hole is 47 mm.
The measurements of the keeper plate that fits on the door frame are 119 mm high by 29 mm wide.
The thickness of the keeper plate (or striking plate) is approx 4 mm brass.
The total length of the 6 keys range from 74mm to 75mm mm (approx 3 inches long)
TIP: On these sort of locks, Once fitted to the door, It is always much easier to use the key to put the dead bolt in the locked position with the door open! BEFORE you fit the front face plate and two small screws to finish the job.
PLEASE STUDY ALL 11 PHOTOS as they form a very big part of the DESCRIPTION in this listing and they show any imperfections that this lock may have as well as they show some of the most relevant measurements that are needed.
I have described this item to the best of my knowledge and this lock is in perfect working order and in fantastic used condition.
