Seller's Description
Hi there Welcome to this listing,
Here I have for sale one very rare and hard to find 1920's vintage Gibbons Wolverhampton 4 lever warded Mortice dead Lock and 1 working ORIGINAL Gibbons "Fire" key which still works the lock perfectly with a very nice smooth action. The key is marked with "Gibbons W'hampton" followed by "Fire F No 3" This lock has been in my personal lock collection for many years and has been well looked after,Hence it is in fantastic clean condition and in full working order.
There is a brass keeper plate and 4 brass wood screws included with this lock.
This lock is suitable for both left and right hand doors as there is no latch bolt on this lock to worry about.
This lock has 4 levers (plus internal warding) and is quite secure as Gibbons made some very good heavy duty secure locks designed for shop front doors and industrial buildings as well as residential buildings too.
This lock has no markings on its face, It dates from the 1920's era and is a 4 spring lever mortice dead lock that has been beautifully made to work well, It is an early "Fire lock" which was designed for use on shop doors and industrial buildings, The idea behind this was that the local Fire Brigade had an identical skeleton key to unlock these locks in an emergency to gain quick access in order to put out a fire quickly in the event of one. I believe modern "Fire locks" still exist to this day and are used in congestion with the local councils and the Fire Brigade. Of course the quality and the keys have totally changed but this lock would have been one of the original early "Fire locks" back in the day some 95 to 100 years ago.
It is in perfect working order, good clean condition and has gleaming polished brass work which looks great despite its age and many years of use.
Please bare this in mind that this is a very old lock from the 1920's era and it has some age related marks and rust pitting on the lock and the key and shows signs of many years use. Please see all 17 photos and study them carefully before you decide to buy this fabulous very rare lock, as I always do my very best to give a 100% honest description.
Again, This lock in good condition for its vintage age but being an USED, old original lock it does have some marks and show some obvious signs of use and wear which only adds to its original character ! so please bare this in mind before you decide to buy this great ultra rare antique lock and study all the photographs very carefully as they show the actual lock that you will receive and also some relevant measurements that may be needed.
Measurements for this lock are below;-
Size of lock face: 144 mm high by 31 mm wide by approx 7.5 mm in depth.
Size of lock body or lock case is: 75 mm long by 84 mm high by 18 mm thick. (the lock case length is excluding the 7.5 mm thickness of the front steel lock plate and the shiny brass face plate). Buyer to note that the overall thickness of the lock body around the key hole is 22 mm, this is because the lock body has a round area that is around the key hole on both sides of the lock body which is approx 2 mm thick (Please study the photos for more info)
Total depth of this lock is: 82 mm. (this is including the 7.5 mm thickness of the front steel lock plate and the shiny brass face plate).
The measurement from the front face of this lock to the center of the key hole is 39 mm.
The measurements of the keeper plate are 100.5 mm high by 29 mm wide.
The thickness of the brass keeper plate is 4 mm.
The total length of the key is 86 mm (just over 3" 1/4 inches long)
PLEASE STUDY ALL 18 PHOTOS as they form a very big part of the DESCRIPTION in this listing and they show any marks or imperfections that this lock may have being an original 1920's period lock as well as they show some of the most relevant measurements that are needed.
I have described this item to the best of my knowledge and this lock is in perfect working order and in fantastic used condition.
