GPO Chubb Slam Lock 1955 1 Working Key Brass 6 Levers May Suit Some Post Boxes

Here I have for sale a really fabulous and very hard to find rare vintage CHUBB 6 lever high security solid brass LEFT HANDED slam lock for a safe or a post box ?... MAY SUIT LARGE CABINET OR LARGE CUPBOARD ??

I think this lock may have come from a Post Box ?, It has been in my personal lock collection for many years, it is very unusual !

It may fit some post boxes... or on the other hand it could be used as a large safe or cupboard lock as it is very secure with the 6 levers and tamper proof locking bolt.

This lock is complete with 1 working key (not sure if its the original Chubb key or a duplicate key ?) it is stamped with "KCI" (same as the lock so is probably some sort original duplicate key) It still works the lock perfectly with smooth but very firm action as this lock is spring loaded and operates very similar to a standard Yale night latch.

This lock is LEFT HANDED (with the keyhole on the left hand side when looking at the door from the front when it opens out towards you) and is stamped "CHUBB" followed by "LONDON" at the top and it is stamped "1955" followed by "KCI" at bottom. It dates from the mid 1950's era and is in fantastic used condition showing the beauty of the solid brass and it looks absolutely stunning with its gleaming shiny brass work !

This great lock is now a collector's item due to its vintage age and its rarity. 

This is a very high quality 6 lever solid brass heavy gauge slam lock which is extremely well made at a time when materials were much cheaper and people took more time and pride in their work. 

PLEASE NOTE THAT THEY ARE A FEW DIFFERENT TYPES OF VINTAGE POST BOX LOCKS, THIS ONE IS THE WIDER SURFACE MOUNTED SPRING LOADED SLAM TYPE LOCK AND MAY NOT FIT ALL POST BOXES - LOCK IS IN FULL WORKING ORDER AND IS BEING SOLD AS A COLLECTOR'S ITEM ONLY.

This lock's slam bolt has two brass parts that make up the deadbolt where the thinner brass part is meant to remain pushed in to the lock when the door is shut, this then locks the main bolt solid in position so that no one can use a thin tool (or credit card !) to undo the deadbolt whilst the door shut and locked. One turn of the key against the spring loaded bolt is all that it takes to unlock this lock and open the door, This is pretty much the same principle as a standard Yale lock (night latch).

If put back into service, the next owner may need to make a special keeper plate or ensure that the thin metal part of the deadbolt does not spring out into the keeper hole (whilst the door is shut), as it is meant to remain pushed into the lock in order to engage the security latch lock mechanism that prevents anyone from fiddling the lock bolt with a thin tool or a credit card ! whilst it is locked with the door shut. 

Please see all  20 pictures and study them carefully as they show the actual lock you are buying and the over all condition that it is in including any marks and imperfections it may have. The pictures also show some relevant measurements that may be needed. 

The measurements of this lock are below:-

Height of lock back plate is 101.5 mm.

Width of lock back plate is 66 mm. 

The distance between the left edge of this lock to the center of where the key hole is, is 33.5 mm (please allow and add an additional 5.5 mm on to this measurement as the lock bolt does not go fully in and flush with the side if the lock when held by the key in the unlocked position).

The measurements of the lock case part that protrudes is 66 mm wide by 72.5 mm high. 

The depth of this lock is 20 mm.

The total length of the key is 82.5 mm.

I have described this item to the best of my knowledge and this lock is in perfect working order and in fantastic used condition.
