    Thanks Kimbo,
sounds like we've read the same books
or whatever it is 'They' say.
    LOL

Biggest problem I've found, with the more ecent version of PO's, is folks are always 'forgetting' to tell a person what the Postal Order is for - or where it comes from!
So, when opening an envelope with just a PO in it and nothing else, we're left wondering "What the heck is this for!" (when you've been lucky enough to sell more than one thing at the same price I mean!)

Wonder if they 'forget' to keep their cash receipt too?
Meaning they'll have no proof they sent the darn things!
    LOL

I offer Google Checkout but no PeePal, and as such most of my postage is Recorded; +70p is what most people add on to their P&P for their time and materials anyway, I mostly re-use envelopes and bubble wrap so don't incur many packing costs.

    ...
Not too clear on what you mean by 'crossings' myhobbybox,
nor too clear what exactly, on a cheque, can be 'opened' ...

The way I read things, due to rule changes which came into operation last November, folks should know,
there is now what is known as 'the 2,4,6 Rule'...

    The 2-4-6 rule means cheques
    earn interest after 2 days
money can be withdrawn after 4 days
    and clear after 6 days
so Should be safe and 'ungettable attable' by the payee,
    LOL
so, I feel, it should be emphasised, cheques from some banks can be stopped at Any time within that six day period
    ...

The items I offer for auction are not of sufficient monetary value to warrent Special Delivery costs and any claims I have Had to make , few thought they be, have been responded Quickly to and processed with about two months.
    ......
Thanks for the other advice myhobbybox, it is much appreciated.
    Hi Sparrow UK
Thanks for the reminder on the 2,4,6 day clearing, it should clarify matters for most people but the "clearing" still allows banks to play with our money on the overnight market and rake in loads of lolly. I also discovered that the 2,4,6 day clearing also covers the few remaining building societies using the clearing system when previously their account holders had to wait up to 10 long days before seing the colour of their money.

The point on crossing of cheques relates to the UK where chequebooks are now issued with printed crossings with "Account Payee" or "A\C payee" between vertical parallel lines some cheques have "only" printed at the end of the payee line, some do not.

I think there are different regs. in Eire where "Account Payee" is not the recognised crossing and there may be a different tag at the end of the payee line.

My comment about postal orders was that although if crossed they must be paid into the bank to obtain value, as they have already been bought and paid for by the purchaser I personally regard them as ready cash even if the value will not hit my account until several days later. Stolen P.Os are a risk but probably a very small one.

My recent experience with a missing Signed For letter, no value other than my desire to ensure it reached the addresse, has taught me never to pay a premium to Royal Mail again for a service which they couldn't provide in this instance and couldn't look for either as they had not got as far as logging it for Signed For delivery. Items of real value should probably therefore be sent by Special Delivery, sad, but I think true.

Sorry to butt in, but you can "cash" a crossed postal order straight away at the post office, the way you do it is by giving them the postal order & but 1 stamp. That can be a 1p stamp or standard 1st / 2nd class stamps. I have done this many times as the postal order is used for paying the postage, and I get the difference back. So if I get a PO for £10.00 and the postage is £1.50 I will always get £8.50 back.

Very interesting point and worth keeping in mind. Seems the Post Office regards it as their own paper and can "exchange" it for another service i.e postage and refund the difference. Must remember this useful bit of info.

The rules are that you must pay POs into a bank account, into a savings account, or you can use them to pay bills at the post office... it just never occurred to me that they'd give change - I assumed they had to be lower value than the total paid. An excellent tip,and well done again raindropsies.

I always send everything recorded. With regards postal orders I always send uncrossed these can be cashed straight away crossed is like the bank they will not clear straight away.
