Question Can I offer PP but Only with conditions ?

    Hi,
    Have just Finished with 'elsewhere'
    (Yey! )
    so have a PP account.
Intend offering (uncrossed) Postal Orders or Cheques as preferred payment methods ...
    However, what I'd like to know is;

Can I offer PP in my listings but Only when buyers are happy to pay for Signed For / Tracking ? (Presently 0.72p)

I noticed 'elsewhere' that the dreaded Claw-backs tend to occur only when items were shipped without tracking ...

Has anyone Known of Claw-Backs that happened when items were tracked?

Would especially welcome comments from anyone who has been around EBid for a while, selling ladies clothes (Used..)

Not sure about the paypoo question, for higher priced items I always include recorded in the postage cost. I would never pay buy uncrossed postal order anyone could cash it, safer for crossed, Why not offer google checkout, far cheaper than paypoo

Hi, and Thanks for replying so quickly.

I often wonder why folks use Postal Orders and cross them.
(apart, of course, from those who, for Whatever reason, do not have access to a bank account).
I know they can be cashed by anyone if they're not crossed, but crossed ones take the same amount of time as a cheque to clear as they are treated exactly like cheques by the banks .

It's fine when selling higher priced items, you can seamlessly integrate any shipping costs involved
but when others are offering shipping at rock bottom costs
and you're only asking a few pounds for an item, it's not so easy.

Somewhat wary of using Google Checkout as I'm a housewife and grandmother, not a 'Merchant'.

Unless anyone enlighten me on this?
    LOL

Don't be put off by the name - I'm not a merchant or business seller either, but I along with many other private sellers here have opened a Google Checkout account. Although it is designed primarily for business users, there's nothing to stop anyone using it. See this thread for more info: http://helpdesk.ebid.net/showthread.php?t=107494

Just a few comments here. Crossed postal orders are safer as they cannot be cashed and have to be paid into a bank account, uncrossed P.Os are unsafe as they are as good as cash to a thief. As P.Os have already been paid for by the purchaser, crossing them protects them but I would regard them as an instant payment anyway. All UK personal cheques have printed crossings and these crossings should not be opened, the cheque should be paid into the bank - 3 or 4 days to clear should be sufficient, but allow longer if worried about cancellation or insufficient funds.

Royal Mail Signed For cannot be relied on to reach the addressee. If the item does not get as far as being logged as Signed For, the missing package cannot then be traced. If sending an item of value it would be advisable to use Special Delivery, more expensive, but the item is kept apart from the other post from receipt to delivery to addressee and this is what you pay for.

I hope someone else can advise on the clawbacks.

    Hi myhobbybox,
It's my experience that crossing Postal Orders makes the bank treat them as cheques and so three days will not see Most cheques clear (please see 2,4,6 Rule note below)
    so, they're hardly 'instant'.
    ...
Not too clear on what you mean by 'crossings' myhobbybox,
nor too clear what exactly, on a cheque, can be 'opened' ...

The way I read things, due to rule changes which came into operation last November, folks should know,
there is now what is known as 'the 2,4,6 Rule'...

    The 2-4-6 rule means cheques
    earn interest after 2 days
money can be withdrawn after 4 days
    and clear after 6 days
so Should be safe and 'ungettable attable' by the payee,
    LOL
so, I feel, it should be emphasised, cheques from some banks can be stopped at Any time within that six day period
    ...

The items I offer for auction are not of sufficient monetary value to warrent Special Delivery costs and any claims I have Had to make , few thought they be, have been responded Quickly to and processed with about two months.
    ......
Thanks for the other advice myhobbybox, it is much appreciated.

Your experience is right - the banks *should* treat them like cheques, and so should the post office, that's what the crossing is for. It means they can't be cashed, only paid into an account. However, the big difference is that with a postal order rather than a cheque, the funds have been provided in advance, they do not rely on an account being checked to back them up - so they can't bounce. Once you have a valid postal order you are guaranteed payment - it can't be refused. The only risk is that the PO is a forgery - and the number of those encountered by the average man in the street is vanishingly small.
