Polished Limb Cast Dendrite Butte Display: Black Dendrites & White Orbs; Oregon

The upper reaches of central Oregon's Crooked River are famous for agates and petrified wood. This is one of the famous limb casts from the southeastern portion of the drainage southwest of Paulina. This preserved portion of a log does not have much in the way of preserved bark or wood grain. The polished face, however, shows very fine black dendrites and interesting small white orbs (some of them hollow) floating in clear to white (with a pinkish undertone) chalcedony. There is even a bit of carnelian along one edge. The back and sides are unfinished, but it still sits securely without the aid of a stand. The polished, slanted top maximizes the surface displayed to the viewer, and. this will be a intriguing addition to a collection.

Limb casts are formed when a buried tree or shrub branch is buried and rots away, leaving a void. Agate or other material eventually fills this void, preserving the shape and features of the original plant material. You sometimes see this material made into cabochons. The pictures show the stone dry.
