Seller's Description

Hello there and welcome to this listing,

Here I have for sale one very, very nice hard to find STEEL AND BRASS CONSTRUCTION Late Victorian 1 lever horizontal Mortice Lock and 2 working later period skeleton keys which both work the lock perfectly with a very nice smooth action.

The lock latch bolt is set up at the moment for a **LEFT handed opening door** - Please read details further down below if you would like it changed to Right handed.

This lock is from my personal vintage lock collection and has been well looked after.

This lock has a very short keeper plate tongue - Please make sure that you are OK with this BEFORE you buy this lock. Thank you.

Buyer to note that the door knob spindle sprocket is on the loose side, whilst it still works the latch mechanism PERFECTLY and whilst this may not be an issue once the door knobs/door handles are secured to the door, this is still mentioned here as an 100% honest description so that the person who buys this great lock knows what to expect and how it is rectified.

This lock is a late Victorian horizontal mortice door lock of a very popular English Victorian design, It dates from the 1890's and is in perfect working order but it still has some age related marks This lock is in superb condition with its brass work which looks really fabulous !..

TIP:  If you are having problems getting the lock to sit flush with the door... Always use a small block of wood (to protect the lock from damage) and a hammer, to gently tap the lock face plate flush with the door so that it sits flush with the surrounding wood.

Again, This lock in very good condition for its age but being an USED, old original lock it may show some obvious signs of use and wear which only adds to its original character! so please bare this in mind before you decide to buy this great quality lock and study all the photographs very carefully as they show the actual lock that you will receive and the over all condition that it is in including any marks or imperfections it may have being an old original lock that is now around 130 years old.

There is also a original brass keeper plate (striking plate) and 4 brass fixing screws included with this lock.

This lock has 1 lever plus some warding inside the lock on both sides and is a reasonably secure lock. It is ideal mainly for internal doors where security and home insurance is not an issue, For external doors I recommend using an insurance approved 5 lever deadlock mortice lock.

For secondary semi external doors like a second porchway door, a hallway door or a lobby door, vestibule door, I recommend using an Yale cylinder lock or an 3 or 5 lever deadlock mortice lock along side this lock for better security (if needed).

However if desired, this lock may be used on an external door along with an additional Yale cylinder type lock or a 5 lever mortice dead lock which is insurance approved for added security.

Measurements for this lock are below:

Size of lock face: 117.5 mm high by 26 mm wide by 4.5 mm in depth.

Size of lock body or lock case: 149 mm long (this is excluding the 4.5 mm thickness of the front steel lock plate and the shiny brass face plate) and the lock case is 68 mm high by approx 15 mm thick.

Total depth of this lock is 154 mm. (this is including the 4.5 mm thickness of the front steel lock plate and the shiny brass face plate)

The measurement from the front face of this lock to the center of the key hole is 48 mm.

The measurement from the front face of this lock to the center of the door handle (or door knob) spindle hole is 131 mm.

The measurements of the keeper plate (striking plate) are 105 mm high by 21.5 mm wide (at its narrowest point) and 31 mm wide (at its widest point) which includes the length of the keep plate tongue/lip which guides the lock catch bolt smoothly into the keeper plate or striking plate hole without it damaging the door frame! The thickness of the keeper plate (or striking plate) is approx 1.5 mm brass.

The total length of both keys are approx 95 mm (almost 4 inches long)

The lock latch bolt is set up at the moment for a **LEFT handed opening door**, the lock latch bolt is *reversible* and can be changed to suit a *Right handed opening door* simply by undoing 1 screw, carefully removing the lock case cover, holding the spring whilst pulling the latch bolt out of the lock very carefully and then turning it the opposite way round before placing it back into the lock and letting go of the spring and then refitting the lock case cover and 1 screw.  (This is a slightly more complicated lock so only do this if you know what you are doing !)

(recommended) **If** you would like me to reverse the latch bolt for you to your liking **BEFORE** I post this lock out to you, PLEASE LET ME KNOW (BY AN EBID MESSAGE) *IN ADVANCE* WHETHER YOU WOULD LIKE THE LATCH BOLT REVERSED FOR A RIGHT HANDED DOOR BEFORE YOU BUY?...as I really don't mind helping you out so that way the lock is ready for you to fit as soon as you receive it.

***IF I DO NOT RECEIVE THIS MESSAGE  FROM THE BUYER*** (ASKING FOR THE LATCH BOLT TO BE REVERSED), THEN THE LOCK WILL BE POSTED OUT TO YOU *EXACTLY* AS SET UP IN THE PHOTOS FOR A**LEFT HANDED** OPENING DOOR. - If in doubt, please study the last photo in this listing very carefully and see which way your door opens ! and which way round the latch/catch bolt is ON YOUR DOOR ? (as this lock can fit right handed or left handed doors with a minor adjustment to the latch mechanism inside this lock)

TIP: On these sort of locks, Once fitted to the door, It is always much easier to use the key to put the dead bolt in the locked position with the door open ! BEFORE you fit the front face plate and two small screws to finish the job.

PLEASE STUDY ALL 12 PHOTOS as they form a very big part of the DESCRIPTION in this listing and they show any imperfections that this lock may have as well as they show some of the most relevant measurements that may be needed.

I have described this item to the best of my knowledge and this lock is in good working order and in great used condition.
