Seller's Description

Old Gaumont Cinema Doncaster Hall Gate 1977, Large Bus Photo

Description: Large approx 11" inch x 8" inch photo of the old Gaumont Cinema at Hall Gate in Doncaster in 1977.

The bus is a 1965 South Yorkshire Transport, Roe bodied Leyland, route 74, destination unknown, Registration FDT37C, fleet number 37, and seen here passing the cinema at Hall Gate crossroads, at the junction of Thorne Road. It is busy with traffic and a 1976 Opal Saloon, registration NDT661R heads in the opposite direction towards High Street. The bus has a busy load of passengers and at closer inspection at the rear of the bus there is young toddler with a dummy looking out of the back window at something in the distance while her mother sits beside her. The little girl will be around 50 years of age now.

The cinema is showing three films... 'Confessions of a Window Cleaner' (x), Mel Brooks in 'Blazing Saddles' (AA) and 'Breakout' (AA). The cinema was demolished around 15 years ago but if you look on streetview you will see it was still there in 2008, looking delapidated in 2009 and gone by 2011, after which it has been a gravel car park ever since.

A wonderful busy street photograph of a bygone era in Doncaster.
