Seller's Description

Oxford St Andrate's Bus Stop 1976, Large Photo

Description: This is a Large 11"" inch x 8"" inch photo of a period scene of St Andrate's, Oxford in 1976. a 1963 Alexander bodied Daimler Fleetline, fleet number 911, registration plate 5248HA, route 570 and destination board 'Old Marston' sits driver-less and empty whilst it's partner, fleet number 922, route 590 'Park & Ride', with registration plate 5264HA  is taking on passengers.

A lady who has just alighted is waiting to cross the road, as a man in a trilby rides past on his bicycle.
This scene is just opposite the Oxford Post Office and in the background is the Town Hall, with Matthews Comfort pub and what is now the Oxford International Study Centre by the side of the buses.

Oxford was one of the earliest to initiate the 'Park & Ride' service in the 1970's due to the high population of car-less people at the time. The Daimler fleetlines were ex-Midland Red, with fleet 911 in particular being on loan to City of Oxford in October 1976 and being withdrawn only one month later, from whence it passed to City of Oxford Motor Services in December 1976, as it is seen here with its new fleet number.

A typical 1970's week-day scene in Oxford depicting a classic pair of vintage Fleetlines in formation.
