Seller's Description

Lyme Regis 1972, Exmouth Bus at Sidmouth Road, Large Photo

Description: This is a Large 11"" inch x 8"" inch photo of a period bus scene in Beautiful Dorset in 1972. A Royal Blue liveried, 1960, Bristol MW, fleet number 2242, registration plate 621DDV, destination board 'Exmouth, Bridport, Lyme Regis', is seen here pulling up the A3052 Sidmouth Road hill, after just leaving Lyme Regis on it's journey from Bridport to Exmouth. The bay of Lyme Regis sits resplendent in the background, and a 1972 new VW Beetle is seen passing the 'Dangerous Hill' sign further down the road.

The Austin Mini Traveller with period roof rack and young boy in the passenger seat is parked on the pavement and the bus driver is in full uniform with shirt and tie. It is a beautiful sunny day and a woman on the front seat of the bus is wearing her sun glasses, whilst the driver has one hand on the gear lever has he climbs the steep gradient towards the countryside ahead.

This area is very much the same today, but the period 'No Waiting' signs and the concrete Stanton lamp post have long since been removed, and the 'Dangerous Hill' sign has been replaced with a modern '14% - Engage Low Gear' sign. Part of the wall on the left has been converted into a fence and the tree is no longer there, nor is the small building which has been replaced by a garden hut. The bench in the distance is no longer there, and the beautiful mansion-like building has recently been converted into, guess what? (no, not a supermarket)... apartments. Nothing new there then.

In 1973 the bus was converted to DP41F, repainted in local green and white coach livery and fleet renumbered to 2906. In 1977 it was transferred to Barnstaple, and in 1978 it was withdrawn from service with the Western National Omnibus Company Limited (Exeter), when it was sold to a dealer 'Hartwood Exports Limited', Hoyland Common.

A magnificent scene capturing this majestic old bus in a moment of nostalgic splendour on a wonderful, classic route.
