Original 1876 11 3/4 inch x 8 3/4 inch Steel Engraving titled KING JOHN SIGNING MAGNA CARTA
King John sits on a throne, surrounded by attendants, on his left is a bishop, who holds a scroll; John gestures to a Baron in front of him, on the right and in the background stand hordes of soldiers.
Engraved by John Rogers (active 1810s - 1830s).
After John Hamilton Mortimer (1740 - 1779). John Hamilton Mortimer ARA was a British figure and landscape painter and printmaker, known for romantic paintings set in Italy, subjects from national history, works depicting conversations, and works drawn in the 1770s portraying war scenes.
Beneath the main image is a smaller engraving titled The King’s submision to the Pope
