Seller's Description
Chatham Borstal Bus in Dock Road 1974, Medway, Large Photo
Description: This is a Large 11"" inch x 8"" inch photo of a period street scene at the old junction of Dock Road and The Brook in Chatham, Kent in 1974. A Maidstone & District NBC, 1967 'Pay as You Enter' Northern Counties bodied Daimler Fleetline bus, fleet number 6123, registration plate MKO123F, destination board 'Special A', makes it's way down Dock Road, past The Brook on it's way towards the High Street. It is displaying a windscreen board that reads ' Medway Borough Council Special Buses Services - Borstal - A'. A National Bus banner advertisement 'Join the Big Fuel Saver' adorns the side of the bus and most likely relates to the energy crises that began in October 1973. The bus driver's daily newspaper is clearly visible on the dashboard and a handful of solemn passengers are seated on both decks, obviously en-route to to visit their sons or daughters at the Borstal young offenders prison.
This junction is now controlled by traffic lights and has undergone extensive redevelopment in the last few years, with Dock Road (leading down from the church) now continuing straight along The Brook (the side road where the car is pulling out of), and Globe Lane (the road where the bus is heading) now hosting a 'drive through' bus station.
The prefabricated council building on the left of the photograph is no longer there but is now a landscaped park area. The building on the right is now the Army Careers Centre and St Mary Church at the top of the hill has since been renovated. The old Town Hall, now the Brook Theatre, is out of picture, behind the car that is pulling out of the junction.
An intriguing moment in a busy Medway town in the early 1970's.
