The way I understood it Huddy, if you see an illegal item you are supposed to report it. I think the boys have been putting in overtime as of late getting the new servers sorted out. Sure they could hire more people but then we'll all pay the price in more listings fees.

After all, the pen is mightier than the sword! But while I share the abhorrence of knife crime, I think the idea of banning the sale of household knives online is flawed. The knife is not the problem. The user of the knife is if that knife is used as a weapon. If selling knives online is banned, where does that line of reasoning stop? As you say, Dennis, a pencil can be a lethal weapon, as can a knitting needle or a cricket bat.

Kim....I also accept what you are saying..about eBid needing to keep within the law so.if knives are not allowed to be bought in shops if under 18 then they shouldn't be sold here...I think that is the law as it stands.

I'm not convinced that youngsters would buy knives on-line though...I don't know of any under 18's personally that buy anything on-line except music...and most of that is downloaded unless they can get it for free

Not only is it the law which is a problem, it's also Ebid's image and reputation.

If they are serious about going global, then image and reputation is everything.

What this site stands for effects us all as sellers.

I do, a 16 year old in our village buys computer bits from the other side all the time. He told me he also sells on there, although his not being allowed to put in postage has stopped that.

Still lots of knifes for sale on here, bread knifes could and would do a lot of damage even if not sold to an under 18 year old,not only kids who kill and maim with knifes

On heart fm it announced today that essex has the highest rate of knifes being sold to under 18s, firstly why would youngsters want to buy them in the first place, cos they admire there beauty, no to say that they own one,

They also said that they are going to clamp down on shops that are selling them to youngsters

If you agree or not, if a youngster cannot get them from the shops then they will look for alternative ways of buying a knife, and they WILL look to buying online where age dont seem to matter

I'm not quite sure if there is a way of stopping all violent crime by simply banning anything that could be used as a weapon even though it be necessary tool. Speaking from experience in both the military and law enforcement I think it's a useless battle.

Dennis, you hit the nail on the head with that one. (Careful, they may soon ban that hammer.) There is no way of stopping violent crime. Period. It has been encoded in the human psyche since the dawn of time. It would take another thousand years of genetic engineering (and Dr. Phil) to even put a small dent in the formation of that primal drive. It is ludicrous to think that banning any object will ever influence the flow of violent crime. Let us not forget that criminals and violent natured people are very resourceful. They tend to use whatever is available. (Even fists and feet. Can we ban those?) Or, if the weapon of choice is not legally available, it can still be obtained through illegal methods (a.k.a. the Black Market). I’m sure you are familiar with the popular saying in the US – “If guns are outlawed, then only Outlaws will have guns.” Banning any item is a useless defense against crime. But where does it end? I rue the day that I can no longer legally possess my screwdrivers, hammer and cordless drill (my home will fall to ruins ). Must I also forfeit my meat thermometer and corkscrew? (What?! No more London Broil and White Zinfandel? ) Hey, what about my box cutter and packaging tape dispenser with the sharp, jagged teeth? Well, there goes my livelihood on eBid.

But I'm more concerned that the site appears to be having some issues resulting from this switching over of servers.

Frankly, I'm beginning to wonder if my fifty bucks was money reasonably spent or just frittered away. So far the site won't even let me list my first auction because of some technical problems

I didn’t have any site issues yesterday while everyone else seemed to, but then I did encounter issues today after it was all said an’ done. I spent some time clearing the ol’ cache (and threw in some disk cleanup for good measure), then she was good-to-go. Perhaps you could just try clearing your cache – deleting your Temporary Internet Files. Starting fresh and new - Might do the trick.
