The Practice is a novel of six men - six doctors on whom the stethoscope has perceptively been turned to reveal the heartbeats, personal worlds and peculiar problems that beset a few representatives of those to whom all men entrust their lives. — Young Trevor Shaw, newly christened with the magic, M.D., comes to the village of Plume to join the practice. As he is exposed to the social pressures of a doctor's life in a small town, as he observes the mounting pressures on the weaknesses of his fellow practitioners,, as he sees what happens when a doctor commits the unpardonable social crime of ordering an autopsy on a woman known socially by his colleagues - a woman who has died under mysterious circumstances - Dr. Shaw begins to realize the difficulties of operating strictly by the Hippocratic Oath which he has sworn.

As Trevor Shaw becomes acquainted with the members of the Practice, the reader gains insight into the doctor's private worlds only to discover that here, as elsewhere, there are frustrations, neuroses, and unsatisfactory compensations for unfulfilled dreams. And there is the village of Plume with its social lions, its normal everyday people, its outcasts and its misfits. All have in common a faith in their own superiority to their fellow men and a need to rely on the doctors of the Practice when something goes wrong. The Practice is a different novel of the world of medicine. If it may raise doubts as to the divine status sometimes accorded men of medicine, it also points to the undeniable corollary that gods do not practice medicine, men do.
