- Comments: The Talyllyn railway came into operation in 1865 carrying slate and is the oldest volunteer preserved/run narrow gauge railway in the world. It was also the first narrow gauge railway authorized by parliament to carry passengers. The line inspired the Rev. W. Awdry to write Thomas the Tank Engine and other “The Railway Series” books for children. His office is preserved in the museum there. The preservation of this line also inspired the Ealing Comedy movie “The Titfield Thunderbolt”. A great place to visit if you don’t fancy the more pricey Ffestiniog or Welsh Highlands Railways.
