After the painting by William Hamilton (1751 - 1801). Painter of decorative and history subjects, and some portraits. Son of a Scottish assistant to Robert Adam, who sent him as young man to Rome; first a pupil of Zucchi and trained as an architectural draughtsman. Entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1769 as painter. Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1774-1801. Elected ARA 1784 and subsequently RA 1789. Produced pictures for Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery and for Macklin. Designed cabinets and stain glass for William Beckford.
