Beschreibung (Anbieter)

Original 1952 Reprint 13 1/2 inch x 8 1/2 inch Colour Print of the 1855 Lithograph titled CLIPPER SHIP “RED JACKET” - IN THE ICE OFF CAPE HORN, ON HER PASSAGE FROM AUSTRALIA, TO LIVERPOOL, AUGUST 1854.

Red Jacket was a clipper ship, one of the largest and fastest ever built. She was also the first ship of the White Star Line company. She was named after Sagoyewatha, a famous Seneca Indian chief, called "Red Jacket" by settlers. She was designed by Samuel Hartt Pook, built by George Thomas in Rockland, Maine, and launched in 1853, the last ship to be launched from this yard..

Engraved by Charles Parsons (1821 - 1910). An American artist and lithographer who, after being apprenticed to George Endicott, worked for Nathaniel Currier, later Currier & Ives. He became head of the art department of Harper’s publishing firm in 1863.

After Joseph B. Smith (1798 - 1876). An American painter.

Originally produced in 1869 by Currier and Ives. The New York firm of Currier & Ives grew from a printing business established by Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) in 1835. Expansion led, in 1857, to a partnership with brother-in-law James Merritt Ives (1824–1895). The firm operated until 1907, lithographing over 4,000 subjects for distribution across America and Europe with popular categories including landscape, marines, natural history, genre, caricatures, portraits, history and foreign views. Until the 1880s, images were printed in monochrome, then hand-colored by women who worked for the company at home.

Inscription under the image: “DRAWN BY J.B. SMITH & SON, BROOKLYN, L.I. ON STONE C. PARSONS. // Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1855, by N. Currier, in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the Southern District of N. Y. // REPRINTED FROM LITH. N. CURRIER, N.Y.”

Published by Bonanza Books, New York
