New, old stock produced by Wood Auto to replace Lucas No. 255728 pinion retaining spring for certain M418G & M45G starter motors. Use dimensions below.
Of the two springs in the drive assembly this is the small pinion retaining one (often erroneously referred to as the return spring) used to stop the pinion travelling down the spiral under heavy braking and damaging the pinion and flywheel ring gear. Well worth replacing if defective in any way.
Lucas listed applications are too vast to list so if you are unsure please contact me with either motor service number or make / model / year and I will advise. A few M418G & M45G motors use different pinion retaining springs. One widely used starter that does use this spring is the M45G 26043A (Armstrong Siddeley Star Sapphire, Aston Martin / Lagonda (1949-64), many Moris Commercials, Riley 2&1/2 Litre, etc.
Dimensions: free length 1 & 1/2 ins / 3.9cm. diameter 15/16 ins / 2.4cm. Right hand coil, rectangular section wire.
