"I, John Pearson, of Maxim Works, Stanningley, near Leeds in the County of York, Engineer, do hereby declare the nature of this invention to be as follows: This invention which relates to hoisting apparatus has for object to provide means whereby a load that is being hoisted can be sustained in any desired position, and whereby the said load can be safely lowered under the action of gravity, whilst its descent can at the same time be arrested at will..."
