This little paperback cook booklet has been very economical with space. Like the title says, 500 sandwich recipes here with a few black and white photographs and centerfold that features the same bologna, pickle, and asparagus creation on the front and back cover. If you want to know what the good cooks were featuring at Mid Century, this cookbook has captured it pretty well. At least the lunch and sandwich fare. You'll know where the old vintage cartoon character Dagwood got the idea, when you get to the Double-Deckers and Triple-Deckers. This is like a trip back to the 50s for a sandwich and a visit in Grandma's kitchen - a gem.

There's everything here: two pages devoted to cutting your wheat and white bread artistically to make ribbon sandwiches and checkerboard designs. Waffle Sandwiches (hey, that's an idea that's catching on this year!), Fruit Sandwiches, Calf's Liver Club Sandwiches, Pimiento Sardine Sandwiches - well, the 50s had their own ideas about what was tasty. You'll wish you had a retro lunchbox to pack a Baked Bean Sandwich, Man's Delight, Meat Loaf, and Potted Meat Sammie.
Ham and Raisin, Ham and Prune Sandwiches, Cinnamon Sandwiches (what kids used to make after school - butter, sugar, cinnamon, white or brown bread, and in this recipe, a whole pecan pressed onto the top for eye appeal), plus lots of cottage cheese and cream cheese combos. Bacon Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Toasted Tomato Ham Fingers, and that anytime classic, Fried Egg Sandwiches.
