Robert Siodmak’s “The Suspect” deals with Victorian maladjustment and murder from the point-of-view of the killer rather than the victim. Charles Laughton is cast as a husband whose affection for a beautiful young employee eventually leads him to murder his domineering wife and an inquisitive neighbour. The film deflates the image of eccentric or exotic period criminals by dealing with a middle class murderer acting out commonplace motivation. The Laughton character and the mental turmoil he experiences after his criminal act resemble the protagonists of Siodmak’s major noir films.
The still is in very good condition with slight surface marks.
