Original 1878 10 inch x 6 3/4 inch engraving titled A TURKISH SCHOOL
In the room a group of Muslim children are assembled to receive instruction from a grave-looking schoolmaster, who, reclining behind a low table or desk, holds a cane in his hand for the benefit of idlers or dunces.
Engraved by William Greatbach (1802 - 1894), 2 Crescent Place, Mornington Crescent, London. William Greatbach enjoyed a lengthy career as a portrait and figure engraver, working, in particular, for the annuals which became popular from the 1820s onwards.
From the painting by John Frederick Lewis (1804 - 1876). John Frederick Lewis RA was an English Orientalist painter. He specialized in Oriental and Mediterranean scenes in detailed watercolour or oils, very often repeating the same composition in a version in each medium.
