Original 1729 18 inch x 11 inch Etching with Engraving titled THE SOUTH WEST VIEW OF COLD-NORTON PRIORY IN THE COUNTY OF OXFORD

Print by Nathaniel Buck (1696 - 1779) and Samuel Buck (1696 - 1779)
The Buck brothers recorded ruins throughout England and published 428 engravings of monasteries, abbeys, castles and ruins and 87 long prospects of English and Welsh towns, producing a record of England and Wales before the Industrial Revolution.

Inscription below image: “To the Principal & Fellows of Brazen Nose College in Oxford This Prospect is humbly Inscrib’d by yr. Obedt. humble Serv.ts Saml. & Nathl. Buck. / THIS Priory of Black Canons, was founded by Wm. Fitz-Alan, in the Reign of K. Hen. 2d. dedicated to St. John ye Evangelist & St. Giles, and by him endow’d with divers lands: Reginald E. of Bolon, and Ida his wife confirmed the donations of their Ancestors Anno 1201. K. Hen: 3d: and Ralph E. of Stafford were Benefactors to this house. In the Reign of K. Hen: 7th: it came into the Possession of the Crown, from thence to the Dean & Chapter of St. Stephens Westminstr. of whom Bp. Smith bought it, and inye. 5th: of Hen: 8th gave it to Brazen-Nose College Oxford / S. & N. Buck delin et Sculp.t 1729”

The etching is in very good condition with a small piece out of the lower left corner and minor age-related defects from handling.
