Seller's Description
Original circa 1914 12 1/8 inch x 9 1/2 inch Etching titled ST. MICHAEL’S MOUNT, CORNWALL
View of St. Michael’s Mount with turbulent sea in the foreground and some sailing ships.
Drawn and etched by David Law (1831 - 1901). An etcher and water-colour painter, David Law was born in Edinburgh and apprenticed at an early age to George Aikman, steel-engraver. In 1845, on his master's recommendation, he was admitted to the Trustees' academy, where he studied under Alexander Christie and Elmslie Dallas until 1850. On the termination of his apprenticeship he obtained an appointment as 'hill' engraver in the ordnance survey office, Southampton, and it was not until twenty years later that he realised his ambition, and, resigning his situation, became a water-colour painter. In this venture he had considerable success, but his early training as an engraver had prepared him to be a pioneer in the revival of etching, and he was one of the founders of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in 1881.
From “Modern Etching and Engraving: With Examples by Leading Artists” by Basil Hansard published as part works by Virtue & Co., 7 City Garden Row, City Road, London circa 1914
Image size 9 3/8 inch x 6 inch
The etching, on thick wove paper, is in very good condition. Reverse side blank.
