Seller's Description
Original 1933 14 inch x 11 1/4 inch Portrait of LIL DAGOVER..
Lil Dagover (1897 - 1980) was a German actress whose film career spanned between 1913 and 1979. She was one of the most popular and recognized film actresses in the Weimar Republic. The daughter of a Dutch forest ranger, she was sent to Germany for her elementary education. She broke into German films thanks to her marriage at age of 20 to veteran actor Fritz Daghofer, 25 years her senior. They divorced in 1919 but not before he had introduced her to director Robert Wiene and other notables of the German cinema. She made her screen debut in Fritz Lang’s “Harakiri” (1919) and, immediately after, played the feminine lead in Wiene’s classic of expressionism, “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”. A dark beauty with large, expressive eyes, she usually played frail, menaced heroines. She starred in scores of German films as well as in some Swedish (1926-27) and French (1928-29) and one American film “The Woman From Monte Carlo”.
Portrait by Ferenc Berko (1916 -2000). Born in Nagyvarad, Hungary, Berko lived in London, Paris and Bombay between 1933 and 1947 establishing himself as a filmmaker and photographer, mainly of portraits.
The portrait, on doubleweight paper, is in very good condition wkith Ferenc’s stamp on the reverse.
