Seller's Description

This pretty example of rare Deschutes picture jasper features a scene of stacked hills highlighted with brushstrokes of cream with crisp brown outlines. Sprinkled among the hills are delicate, inky black dendrites (branching formations resembling trees or shrubs). It reminds me greatly of landscapes one sees on antique Persian and Mughal paintings. The triangular shape reminds me of a lateen boat sail. This is a highly sought-after gem jasper type that is prized by collectors and jewel designers. The back is polished. Colors are darker and more saturated than the photos show (more like the last photo with the ruler/measure). For some reason, Deschutes can really mess with camera sensors and the piece can appear quite differently under different light sources. There is no dome on this piece, and it would make a wonderful gem pendant (just add a bead cap to one of the points), or use for a statement ring, or as the centerpiece of a custom brooch or other jewel design. These colors work well with both silver and gold metal settings. An outstanding and now very scarce gem, perfect for your jewelry design, or as an example of Deschutes for your collection.

Deschutes is one of the premier "porcelain" jaspers (so-named because of the glass-like polish which it can take). Deschutes, Morrisonite and Imperial jaspers are the triumvirate representing highest-quality jaspers, and each has been given the designation "King of Jaspers" by various writers. Although it is sometimes confused with the nearby Biggs jasper, Deschutes usually has tighter patterns, a different color palette and is more dense (more highly silicified). Deschutes jasper is now extinct; although the deposit was totally exhausted some 40 years ago, it is still highly sought after by collectors The photos were taken with the material dry under natural sunlight.

Shipping
Get free shipping on additional items when combining for Flat Rate delivery

  • If you are purchasing multiple items within 14 days of your first buy or auction win from me, it is usually possible to combine and pay for the items together to save on shipping costs. If they all fit into one Flat Rate box, the additional items ship at no extra postage cost. If you wish to take advantage of combined shipping of multiple items bought during a 14-day period, do not pay until you have purchased your last item (or after your last auction item has closed), then send me a message requesting combined shipping. Do NOT pay prior to receiving the adjusted invoice. Because the items I sell vary widely in size, weight and fragility, some items may not be able to be shipped together, or may require a larger box. If you are bidding multiple bulky or fragile items, please provide me with your zip or postal code and ask me for an estimate of the cost. After your request, a new invoice will be issued with the postage adjusted.
  • Notes:
Once you make a payment, I typically arrange shipping within 24 hours and it will no longer be possible to combine additional items. Before paying, please wait until your last item has closed, then request an invoice (on the payment screen, click "Request amount").
