"The John Byrne Memorial Tower, erected in honor of the late John B. Byrne, former supervisor of Nantahala National Forest, is located on Wayah Bald, 17 miles west of Franklin on Nantahala Road. Situated on a mountain top 5,336 feet in elevation, it affords an unexcelled view of the Appalachians in North Carolina and three adjoining states. The stone tower is 55 feet tall and there are stairs inside leading to observation tower."
