Seller's Description

Leicester Charles Street 1976, Titan Bus, Large Photo

Description: This is a Large 11"" inch x 8"" inch photo of a period street scene at the Charles Street roundabout, Leicester, in 1976. A Leicester Corporation 1967 Leyland Titan PD3A/12 bus navigates the roundabout, passing the Charles Street exit and about to make it's way on to Belgrave Gate. Surprisingly, this roundabout area has not changed much since the photograph was taken, which is extraordinary, considering the extensive redevelopment and pedestrianization that has taken place in Leicester city centre since the 1970's.

A Triumph 1300 saloon car passes the belisha beacons on the pedestrian crossing, which is now a traffic-lighted pelican crossing, and the building behind it is now the Jobcentre Plus. A Luton topped Ford Transit depicting 'Your Jane Shifton - Handbag Madam', approaches the roundabout on Charles Street, whilst a group of pedestrians make their way past Milbanke Travel Agent and the Wimpy cafe, which is now a 'Subway' takeaway food shop. Another belisha beacon zebra crossing sits outside the 'Safeway' supermarket which is now a 'Wilkinson' department store with no zebra crossing.

The Leyland Titan bus was withdrawn from service in 1982, from whence it was transferred to East Lancs Blue Bus Service.

An interesting everyday scene in Leicester city centre in the 1970's.
