The Last American #1 – “Goodnight, Poughkeepsie”

In this debut issue of the four-part miniseries, Ulysses S. Pilgrim, a U.S. Army officer, awakens from a 20-year cryogenic sleep to find the world devastated by nuclear war. Tasked with assessing the aftermath and rebuilding civilization, Pilgrim emerges into a desolate and silent America.

Accompanied by three AI-driven robots—Charlie, Doody, and Reggie—Pilgrim embarks on a journey through the ruins of the United States. As he traverses the barren landscape, he grapples with the possibility that he may be the last living American.

The narrative blends dark satire with poignant commentary on nationalism, war, and human resilience. The stark, angular artwork by Mike McMahon complements the bleak tone of the story, enhancing its post-apocalyptic atmosphere.

The Last American was published under Marvel’s Epic Comics imprint and was nominated for the 1991 Eisner Award for Best Finite Series.

G / Good – heavy wear or age, complete unless noted
