*************

Salford Museum and Art Gallery, in Peel Park, Salford, Greater Manchester, first opened in November 1850 as the "Royal Museum & Public Library". The museum and library was built to replace the Lark Hill mansion on the higher ground overlooking Peel Park. The library is said to be the first unconditionally free public library in England.[1][2] The art gallery used to house the work of L. S. Lowry, but his paintings are now in the Lowry Centre in Salford Quays.

The gallery and museum are devoted to the history of Salford and Victorian art and architecture. It contains Lark Hill Place, a replica of a Victorian street, with genuine shop fronts. Admission is free.
