Klagenfurt am Wörthersee[3] (German: [ˌklaːɡn̩fʊʁt ʔam ˈvœʁtɐzeː] (About this soundlisten); Slovene: Celovec ob Vrbskem jezeru; Italian: Clanforte; Friulian: Clanfurt),[4] usually known as just Klagenfurt (English: /ˈklɑːɡənfʊərt/ KLAH-gən-foort), is the capital of the federal state of Carinthia in Austria. With a population of 100,817 (1 January 2019), it is the sixth-largest city in the country. The city is the bishop's seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt and home to the University of Klagenfurt, the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences and the Gustav Mahler University of Music.
The city of Klagenfurt is in southern Austria, midway across the nation, near the international border. It is in the middle, almost as far from Innsbruck, to the west, as from Vienna, to the northeast.
Klagenfurt is elevated 446 metres (1,463 feet) above sea level and covers an area of 120.03 square kilometres (46.34 sq mi). It is on the lake Wörthersee and on the Glan River. The city is surrounded by several forest-covered hills and mountains with heights of up to 1,000 m (3,300 ft), for example, Ulrichsberg. To the south is the Karawanken mountain range, which separates Carinthia from Slovenia and Italy.
Stadttheater Klagenfurt is the municipal theatre in Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia in Austria. Its present house was designed by the Viennese architecture office Fellner & Helmer, and completed in 1910.
History
The first theatre in Klagenfurt was installed between 1605 and 1620 as Ballhaus [de] for the aristocracy. Italian troupes appeared, on their way from Venice to Vienna. At the end of the 18th century, the theatre was occasionally opened also for intellectuals, and military and civil officials. In 1811, the wooden structure was rebuilt in stone, called now Altes Theater (Old Theatre).
When it deteriorated, a new house was designed by the Viennese architecture office Fellner & Helmer, who had already built the very similar theatres in Gießen and Gablonz, in 1906 and 1907.[1] Building began in 1908 and was completed in 1910. The house was opened on the occasion of the 60th jubilee of Franz Joseph I of Austria and therefore named "Kaiser Franz Joseph I. Jubiläumstheater".
In den 1960s, the house was renovated, and again from 1996 to 1998 after designs by Günther Domenig.
The Stadttheater Klagenfurt was awarded the Nestroy Theatre Prize in different categories in 2003, 2006 and 2011. Artists who received the prize and worked for this theatre have included Martin Kušej, Bernd Liepold-Mosser [de], Michael Maertens, Michael Schottenberg and Martin Zehetgruber [de].
