Seller's Description
[Title]: Die andere Seite. Erstes bis viertes Heft. (= Issues one to four. All published).
[Political Warfare Executive 1942 - 1943]. Together 162 pages with numerous b/w photographs, illustrations and cartoons. Original printed wrappers. Approximately 105 x 135 mm each. Text in German.
Code 47 [1942]; 59 [1942]; 27 [1943] and 94 [1943].
A complete set of four aerial propaganda booklets, dropped by the Royal Air Force over Germany at intervals of several weeks and months from 1942 to 1943.
Each booklet contains a contribution by famous German author Thomas Mann: 1. Nachruf auf einen Henker. - 2. Die Idee Europas. - 3. Die apokalyptischen Lausbuben. - 4. Ein neuer Glaube (see Bürgin V, 549; V, 552; V, 561 and V, 565).
Further contributions are by notable figures such as Bertolt Brecht, Rainer Maria Rilke, Stefan George, John Steinbeck, G. B. Shaw, Sigrid Undset, Th. Th. Heine, Leni Riefenstahl, and Robert Ziller (=Richard Ziegler), among others. Due to their exceptional literary and artistic merit, these four booklets are unique among World War II aerial propaganda publications.
The first three issues each contain 32 pages of text and a picture supplement on 12 unnumbered pages. The fourth issue lacks the picture supplement and consists of only 32 pages, cover included, but contains numerous pictures and illustrations within the text (see Klaus Kirchner, Flugblattpropaganda im 2. Weltkrieg, vols. 4 and 5).
Wrappers soiled, marked, (in parts heavily) rubbed and creased, staples rusted, several pages dog-eared, the wrapper of the exceedingly rare fourth booklet is loose and chipped, fair condition.
