• Condition: pretty good – it has been opened and unrolled a few times but never stuck on a wall or framed.
• Comments: This is one of the earliest posters that showed light pollution of the night sky in the UK, back in 1989 using US military DMSP weather satellite imagery that could map in the dark. Although it was published by the Daily Telegraph newspaper, this is a version published by the British Astronomical Association / Campaign for Dark Skies (CfDS). CfDS was a very successful environmental pressure group that has persuaded councils and industry to install lower energy street lights and other forms of illumination which direct the light downwards to the ground and no longer being wasted upwards into the atmosphere. This had three effects: (1) lower energy bills, (2) less CO2 produced, and (3) darker skies – so people can see more stars. Although the resolution in this image is not great (about 5km), it does clearly show the most light polluted areas back in 1989, and where to go to get great views of the night sky (e.g. Mid Wales).
