Seller's Description

Bradford Nelson Street 1967, Bierley Bus, Large Photo

Description: This is a large 11"" inch x 8"" inch photo of a period street scene in Bradford in 1967. A Bradford Corporation Transport, East Lancs bodied 1952 AEC Regent III, registration plate HKW75, fleet number 75, route 21, and destination 'Bierley', heads off from the old bus stop at the bottom of Nelson Street where three AEC Regent V's are lined up in the distance. This area today bears absolutely no resemblance at all to what we see in the photograph. In 1967 this whole area was being demolished for the extensive inner-city redevelopments that were to follow in the early 1970's.

As a point of reference, in the far distance behind the last bus, and to the extreme far left of the photograph is the Bradford City Hall. What is now Hall Ings dual-carriageway is now running straight across the photo from right to left, exactly where the rounded building is (which is in-between the city hall and the far bus in the distance). This rounded building was the original old Telephone Exchange, and it formed the bottom outer corner of the old Bridge Street Goods Station, of which demolition of the platforms would commence in 1968, the year after this photograph was taken. The actual goods station platforms and canopy were situated around 200-300 yards to the right of this photo, behind the billboard advertisements, and when full demolition was completed, the Bradford bus Interchange was eventually built on that location in it's various stages.

If you turned right, just past the round building (telephone exchange), you would be on what was Union Street, which no longer exists as it was demolished to make way for the building of the ring-road (Hall Ings), the multi story car park, and the Hilton Hotel. Today, if you draw a straight line from the bottom of Nelson Street, through the middle of the multistory car park and the Hilton hotel to the side of the St Georges Hall, and keep the line parallel with Hall Ings, that is where Union Street used to run, connecting Nelson Street with Bridge Street.

Today, if you turn left where the last bus is in the distance, 100 yards up that road would be Jacob's Well. This photograph was taken on Nelson street, from just below Croft street, exactly where the road entrance is to the bus interchange, just outside the open-air car park. The pavement where the photographer stood would have been exactly at that location, but roughly on the white line in the middle of the road, as this part of Nelson Street underwent slight realignment when the interchange was built.

A fascinating photograph documenting a vintage 1960's Bradford bus scene prior to extensive inner-city redevelopment

This Photograph will look Beautiful in a frame and would make the Perfect Gift
