Seller's Description
LINDISFARNE Jigsaw Puzzle.
A Page from the Lindisfarne Gospels
The intricately ornamented eigth-century manuscript known as the Lindisfarne Gospels was created between 710 and 720 at Lindisfarne monastery, in northwest England. Bishop Eadfrith set down the illuminated Latin text, in honour od st. cuthbert: Eadfrith's suiccessor, Ethelwald, bound the Gospels; Billfrith, an anchorite, then richly ornamented the binding with gold, gilded silver, unalloyed metal, and jewels. Nearly 250 years after the book was made, a priest in durham (where the monks had fled from Viking marauders) translated its Latin text to Anglo-Saxon, the lingua franca of the time. He wrote out his translation between the lines of the original text.
The Gospels' magnificent binding eventually disappeared - probably during the sixteenth century - but the surviving pages, still bright and glowing with colour 1300 years after their creation, can be seen in the collection of the British Library.
An American puzzle issued by Pomegranate.
