Seller's Description
1950s Advertising Jigsaw Puzzle.
1000 Piece - Measures: 19" x 27" (49 x 68.5 cm)
The 1950s dawned, and at last it seemed there were grounds for optimism. After years of hardship, this would be the decade for Britain's recovery. Restrictions were lifted on the sale of petrol, paper and soap. Sweetrationing ended shortly before the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953, and no fewer than 100,000 television sets were sold to those keen to watch the royal pageant in the comfort of their homes.
Self-service supermarkets appeared for the first time, bringing customers an unbelievable range of groceries and a new sense of the excitement of shopping. Boxes, wrappers and posters were bold and colourful - just right to catch the shopper's eye. And with the arrival of independent television in 1955, TV commercials started carrying jingles and slogans straight into the living rooms of the nation.
Prosperous and innocent, the decade of Daz, Spangles and Watch With Mother was summed up by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in 1957 when he stated confidently, "let's be frank about it; most of our people have nevr had it so good."
