What is tungsten exactly? Tungsten is a dense and hard chemical element, also known as wolfram, and it has some pretty amazing properties. Out of all the metals, tungsten has the highest melting point (it doesn’t melt until reaching temperatures as high as 6,100 degrees Fahrenheit) and the highest tensile strength. Tungsten is much harder than steel – five times harder to be exact. It is also extremely durable and somewhat rare.
Tungsten carbide is extremely durable, more durable than gold, palladium, silver or platinum - and highly resistant to scratching. Many people have seen their shiny tungsten jewellery last for years on end. When buying tungsten jewellery, make sure that it contains carbide, this is what makes it scratch-proof.
