The Tower of London is a majestic building, dating back to the Noman Conquest of the 11th Century; it was commisioned by William the Conqueror. Over the centuries many monarchs have expanded or built upon the land to form much of what we see today. Primarily a royal palace and defensive stronghold, it only served as a royal residence on a number of occasions. The Tower is most well-known as a prison, holding some of history's most famous captives including Elizabet I when she was just a princess.
The Tower only ceased to be a prison in the 1950s but maintained its status as an important historical landmark and now attracts more than 2 million visitors per year, many of whom come to view the Crown jewels - the sparkling heritage of the royal line.
The Tower is also famous for its ravens. At least six are kept at the Tower at all times as there is a superstition that if the ravens were removed, the Tower would crumble and the city would be in great peril.
