Topaz Faceted Cushion: Sparkling and Bright, Colorless Gem; 9.1 cts; Burma

Although colorless topaz is often used as a substitute for diamonds, it has its own merits and makes a brighter show than other colorless gems such as quartz and beryl. This piece has a nice cut and is brighter in-hand than my photos show, with no hint of brown or yellow. Topaz is the birthstone for people who were born during the month of November, and the less common varieties can be a welcome surprise to those who only think topaz comes in dull brownish shades.

The photos were taken with the material dry under natural sunlight. At over 9 cts, this one is a nice, collector-size example.
