Kaleidoscope Stone Cabochon: Interesting Mix of Fluorite, Chrysocolla, etc; Utah

Kaleidoscope Stone is a newcomer to the gem market. Although it is sometimes being sold as "agate" or "jasper," it is actually a mix of fluorite, chrysocolla, malachite and other gem minerals. The mixture has varying degrees of hardness, making it a challenge to cut and polish successfully. This piece has a few shallow undercuts, but a nice polish for this material nonetheless. Colors include turquoise blue, red-brown, green, blue-gray and cream in a netlike pattern. Quite beautiful, and fascinating to explore close-up. Unusual combination.

The photos were taken with the material dry under natural sunlight. The colors deepen and vary, depending on the lighting.
