Papa - glad it came out OK!

Bank transfer is perfectly safe, and used all over Europe - in fact the majority of German internet auction traders won't use anything else - (they refuse to use Paypoo)

If using BT in Europe, opt for 'shared costs' where asked - it saves on transfer fees.

People in UK are dinosaurs when it comes to adopting anything 'new' - but this payment method has been in use for years!!

It is not the British people at fault, the problem is the incompetant banks, they are still using systems that were introduced at the begining of banking.

The payment method may have been in use for years, but identity theft and wholesale bank fraud has not.

You may be happy to hand out your bank details, address, real name and every other piece of identifying information necessary for bank fraud to random people on the internet, others of us remain rather more cautious, and given the numbers of threads and posts earlier on this matter where direct debits were just taken out of people's bank accounts on the strength of a phone call, I don't think that caution is misplaced.

OK so the bank will give it back in the end, but that's assuming it's spotted. How many people get robbed and don't notice (on a joint account maybe, where someone may assume that the other has set up a debit)? Or indeed, why should a seller expose themselves to the unnecessary bother of having to sort it out?

If there are costs involved, which there must be, if it involves "shared costs" exactly where is the advantage?

I'm quite happy to 'hand out' less information than is deemed necessary on a cheque to a person I do business with.

I have never EVER had a BT 'go wrong' in the past 5 years - the 'shared costs' amount to pennies, less than Paypoo, and I am happy to extend the extra facility to any buyer who wishes to use it as a service.

Horses for courses, I know, but BT has its uses and so far I have not met a soul who has been cheated through using it, I've only heard some 'did you know that it's possible to be robbed' scenarios. (usually from the same few people)

BTW - when I was advocating 'shared costs' that was for non-UK transactions - within the UK, BT is free.

I'm assuming that you, as an auction Seller/Buyer at some stage give out your real name and address to 'random' others on the internet.

Who said anything about "every other piece of identifying information" I tell very few people my vital statistics and inside leg measurement !

.... and I've never had trouble with BACS nor have I incurred any costs.

Riiiiight, so because it hasn't happened yet it never will? I've never been burgled either, doesn't mean that I don't bother to lock up when I go out.

I'm not sure that a bank thief would need anyone's vital statistics or inside leg measurements really, although maybe if they ordered clothes through using your identity it might help. :P

And the earth hasn't crashed into the sun yet, but it *could*.

A happy medium somewhere between reckless and paranoid would appear to be possible. You two just don't agree about where it is.

The difference being that I am totally powerless to do anything about the earth crashing into the sun.

I don't need to give out my bank details, there are alternatives, if someone refuses to buy with any other method of payment, I am happy for them to go elsewhere, most people use PayPal.
