For some little time now, there has been a spider sitting happily on its web just beyond our back door. I don't know the species, it's about a half-inch long and a mootled brown colour. The web is stretched between the wall of the house and the boundary wall. Easy enough to avoid when going between house and yard. (Easy enough to bump into, too).
We've been happy enough to let it be. Neither my wife nor myself want to needlessly hurt any creature. It's not bothering us and might even be doing us a service, since a lot of the currently-numerous midges are being caught in the web, whereas they might otherwise have made it into the house via the back door. So we call our little friend "Jenny", as in Spinning Jenny.
Today I see there are two more identical spiders on webs strung up outside the kitchen window, spaced apart roughly the width of the back wall. Looking out the window, it's almost as if we have three sentries on guard duty!
I don't have a digital camera or I'd post some pics. Wouldn't you just love that?
