Default Plea for information about the new website

Hi, While browsing the forum today I saw mention of the eBid website being re-designed.

Thinking of what happened last time the site was reborn I am wondering if we could be given a vague outline of changes. (No trade secrets or even specifics, just general information).

For those folks who were not around at the time I will recap on what happened at the last re-incarnation.

    • The resolution of the site was changed with no notice.
    • The colour scheme and logo were changeda also without notice.

These changes had the following knock-on effects:

The screen area for displaying the listings was expanded substantially. (This caused problems for those folks who use templates which of course were rendered un-usable by the change). The templates were stretched and distorted by the new reslolution.

The change of colour scheme and logo meant that people who used stationery (business cards, stickers etc) were left with out-dated items that coulld no longer be used without looking silly and un-professional. I was caught out with this having recently obtained both cards and stickers just before the change.

As mentioned in my opening I am not asking for any specifics, just a simple yes or no to these queries would suffcie. so that people can plan appropriately. Also what is the change-over likely to happen?

    Thanks

Wow, I didn't even know there was going to be a site change, (head meet rock, LOL).

Agree with you, it would be nice to know the changes a bit before they happen, so to prepare if necessary.

Best wishes for many sales to all,

While I didn't get stuck with any business cards with the old logo, I did end up with a couple tee-shirts and a hat with the old red eBid logo. Actually, I just found the hat again in with the rest of the remains of my pickup after the accident. I was wearing it at the time.

The logo is unlikely to change because there is no need whatsoever to do so.

The changes are being developed to enable a more seamless appearance for the site across the wide variety of devices that people are using to access eBid. With the introduction of the apps for mobile devices there was no real conflict with templates or anything so new site changes are unlikely to cause any major problems. I would imagine the changes will be quite subtle because they would still recommend the use of the apps in most cases.

The good thing about this is that eBid are being pro-active, this is the future and it is only recently that some big companies have developed their websites this way - for example the BBC only just recently changed over to their new layout. So whilst eBid got caught short with the mobile technology - it appears that they are not going to get caught out on this one.

Going from my own sales I would say confidently that people now purchasing on eBid using the mobile devices is quite remarkable - so this change will just enhance everything a step further.

This is what has been said in the eBid newsletter.

Welcome to the eBid April Newsletter.
We've been hard at work this month on our brand new website. We're improving the look and feel of eBid and bringing it bang up to date and in line with new Google policies that will penalise sites in mobile search results that are not mobile friendly. The new design incorporates a "responsive" layout that will work correctly on any sized screen without reducing usability or function. So, if you view eBid on your mobile phone's web browser or on a 65" television, all of the website will be usable and accessible. We do advise downloading the eBid app if you are on a mobile device, the built in notifications help keep you right up to date with all your eBid activity. We hope to have the new site live before the next newsletter goes out.
At the same time we have been cracking on with version 2 of our mobile app on Android and iOS. The new app will be an improvement over the current one, using much more up to date technologies and ensuring a smoother and faster ride on both Apple and especially Android devices. We've listened to the feedback from our users about what they would like to see and improvments that can be made and will be making sure they are all incorporated into v2. Many thanks for the people who have commented and given us feedback on our app.
Download the current v1.16 Android app in the Google Play store. Our iOS App is available in the Apple App Store
In anticipation of our new website we are increasing the size of images we use on the site. Our medium sized images are now at 250 pixels and will be widely used on the new site. Also, the large versions of photos are now set at 800 pixels, make sure you upload photos of at least this size (larger ones will be downsized) to make your products stand out and show as much detail as possible.

My guess is that it will be a cosmetic change only, with no major new features (e.g. listing variations) and all the old bugs still in place.

If templates are properly coded then they shouldn't be affected by the revamp.

Will the changes in picture size cause any problems when loading photos to a listing or distort those in existing listings?
    Thanks.

Assuming you are throwing the question open to the public for opinion...

I don't foresee any issues. Images that have already been uploaded to the site with not be altered. The only difference will be is that new images can now be up to 800 pixels in size along the longest side; less than that eBid leaves them alone, greater than that and eBid shrinks them to the 800 pixels size limit.

The other change to images sizes (250 pixel medium size images) are only used by eBid in their page layout, so should not impact the user at all - except for the odd eBid page rendering in certain places that you may have spotted during the transition.
