Thread: Ebola

  1. #21

    Default Re: Ebola

If Ebola does come to a city or town near you what plans do you now have, or will soon put in place, to cope?
    - none I would love to have an underground bunker and would be there now lol!!

Do you trust that the governments have all the correct plans in place to deal with an outbreak?
    - not a hope.
When the news started coming out there was 1 or 2 isolation beds for the whole of England or the UK, this I THINK has gone up to 25?

Do you believe that your local health services are equipped, trained and willing to deal with an outbreak?
    - not a chance they cannot cope with a bad flu stain and the winter sickness bug!
Yes flu can be bad however initially they said ebola 95% death rate, then down to 50%, latest I have heard is 75%, I am guessing though that many cases are never reported especially in areas where things are so difficult.

What do you think about this killer illness?
-personally - no medial knowledge of this area though... that as soon as the stats were higher than the previous high outbreak that things would be bad.
(Also stats wise we have not had any really bad illness for over a hundred years so we must be due...)
I have no doubt it will be all over Europe and America and we just have to hope for the best.
    - one house hold person using the bus, working in a city centre, one house hold person also on a busy bus to college
    - the use of supermarkets etc once it is out there it will spread and no way to reduce this house hold going out etc until a government ban!

If ebola can only be contracted via bodily fluids etc why when disposing of bodies in body bags did people need to be so covered up. Having dealt with a body bag - nothing is getting though that - that is the point!

Now with the nurse in America and a few others infected it will be interesting to see if they keep to the same information.

Hope, pray, build up immune system... I think that that is all we can do...

    Default Re: Ebola

Do not wait for deadly diseases such as Ebola to show up in my area, before familiarizing myself with "Best Practices" recommendations for the infectious agent. In the case of Ebola proper assessment is the beginning point. Being aware of the hallmark symptoms and at risk travel histories of potentially infected individuals.

We are currently told that Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) incubates for 21 days, before symptoms appear. We are currently told that the disease is not transmitted until a person is symptomatic. The CDC has indicated that EVD "should be considered in an individual who develops fever >101.5 F, has severe headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, or unexplained bruising or bleeding 21 days after traveling from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, or Sierra Leone."

After being involved with HIV/AIDS extensively, I am fully aware that information can change frequently when dealing with infectious agents, that are in emerging stages. Particularly if mutations occur. The classical symptoms of EVD are commonly seen in many other diseases. Although it makes sense to identify the high risk areas of exposure potential; it can lead to a false sense of security (of being safe), as long as the deadly virus is contained to those areas.

One of the key factors that caused HIV to spread to other high risk populations, was the apathy towards the virus, that caused AIDS in the "initial high risk population". Many groups thought they were safe, because they were not a part of the "initial high risk population". Focusing too heavily on "high risk locations" fails to take into account human behavior. People can lack knowledge about EVD symptoms, people travel, people deny symptoms, people lie about symptoms, etc.

Best Practices (for providers) also includes isolation of individuals suspected to be infected with Ebola. As well as tracing all known contacts, and isolating them also if they are symptomatic, thus breaking the chain of transmission. Symptomatic individuals are isolated in single room/cohort room or area. Three types of isolation precautions are utilized to contain Ebola; standard, contact, and droplet precautions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmi...ed_precautions

Initiating the necessary precautions is costly, as well as the treatment of this deadly disease. Nations that are heavily impacted by EVD, and lack the necessary resources to contend with Ebola, are absolutely devastated. Nations with stronger infectious disease control resources, will also find themselves devastated, if Ebola is not properly contained.

I'm sure that a lot of people would agree with you. However, back in the real world I guess we'll just have to find a way to cope using whatever resources we can actually get our hands on.

There are different average death rates quoted for different strains of Ebola. There are also the actual death rates for those falling ill in this outbreak - and those vary considerably based on a range of factors including where the patient is, what the local infrastructure is like, how fast the patient is given medical care and the quality of that care.

Sure there is. You just have to make that choice. It's a decision where you balance your perceived need to carry on as normal - and therefore risk contamination - or retreat to a safe zone. The difficulty comes in deciding when to make that choice.

I'd guess that there is a fair chance of getting contaminated material on the outside of the bag, too. Not to mention the fact that someone has to enter a contaminated area in order to get the body into the bag.

There's a lot more you could do. You could spend a lot of time and money preparing for the worst case scenario, buying lots of expensive equipment and stocking up. Or you could scale that back a bit and take reasonable precautions such as stocking up on extra food (etc) to give you a few weeks buffer, buying extra disinfectants and soaps (etc) and discussing the facts with your family to enable you to work out a plan that works for you all. Or you could just sit back and leave it all to someone else, hoping that "they" have the time and resources to look after you should it become necessary.

as for others i would advise to stay in quarantine your selves thats the easy bit, what people need to do to prepare for such a event is the next question
Seems like good advice to me.
