my daughter did that too £264 in one month. Needless to say the phone was taken off her and she was grounded.

All advise and it's effectiveness varies. If you had 10 kids you would need 10 ways to deal with them. I raised 4 and they were all very different but you should explain the rules before letting them play the game----don't give them a phone until they prove they are responsible, etc.
Not sure banning outgoing calls is a good idea...what would happen if they needed to call a taxi in an emergency situation?
I bought my son his first mobile phone when he was sixteen. I would have bought one sooner had I known that having one would later save his life (diabetic emergency...he was too confused to phone for an ambulance and called me instead)
His first phone was a pay as you go...he has never had a contract find...and nither have I.
