Likely a water based glue - soak it a while first

Try sellotape. Put some tape round your fingers and dab at it. The tape should pick up the old gunk.

Linseed oil in most cases is safe for wood , gives it an extra polish , and breaks down most adhesives. also seals and protects the wood .. I'd be willing to bet Olive Oil would work as well.. but I'd say either case if the wood is valuable (antique) or painted, test it on a hidden area first

simple furniture polish..spray some mr sheen on a cloth and rub gently..it will lift right off with no damage
