Seller's Description

Extremely Rare Vintage DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) Berlin Copper Collectible Wall Plate
This copper plate is a rare treasure from modern history and is featured in the DDR Museum in Berlin. This beautifully and incredibly rare plate is a very rare find considering DDR does not exist any longer.

Round copper wall plate. Inscription reads "City Center Berlin Capital of the GDR" on the edge.
Representation of the city map of Alexanderplatz in Berlin and its immediate surroundings with Berlin landmarks such as the TV Tower, Rotes Tarhaus, Nikolaikirche, S-Bahnetz, Haus des Lehrers und Kongresshalle, Haus des Reisens, Haus der Elektroindustrie, Bode Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Volksbühne.

This plate is very rare as it was from East Germany, officially the German Democratic Republic (GDR). This was a country that existed from it's creation on 7 October 1949 until it's dissolution on 3 October 1990. From 1949 to 1989 the country was a part of the Eastern Bloc in the Cold War. Commonly described as a communist state, it described itself as a socialist "workers and peasants" state. It's territory was administered  and occupied by Soviet forces following the end of WWII- the Soviet occupation zone of the Potsdam Agreement, bounded on the east by the Odr-Neisse Line. The Soviet Zone surrounded West Berlin but did not include it and West Berlin remained outside the jurisdiction of the GDR. Most Scholars and academics describe the GDR as a totalitarian dictatorship.
