Somerset Maugham and starring James Hayter, Anne Crawford, Nigel Patrick, Jean Simmons, Michael Rennie, Felix Aylmer, Kathleen Harrison, Michael Hordern, Mary Morris, Glyn Houston, Eliot Makeham, Henry Edwards, Naunton Wayne, Wilfrid Hyde-White, Clive Morton, Bill Travers, Michael Medwin, Roland Culver, Raymond Huntley, Betty Ann Davies, Andre Morell, John Laurie and Finlay Currie.

Three short stories by W. Somerset Maugham, "The Verger", "Mr. Know-All", and "The Sanatorium" are introduced by the author.

Professor Brookfield along with daughters Peggy and Susan move to small town Pasadena, California. Their new neighbor Mrs. Fielding helps them move in, and urges the girls to participate in the annual Rose Bowl beauty pageant. Meanwhile Mrs. Fielding’s son Tom makes eyes at Peggy but she’s smitten with a famous football star so she tries to redirect his interest to Susan.
