Seller's Description

Original 11 5/8 inch x 8 3/4 inch Engraving titled THE TICHBORNE CASE - SKETCHES OF HEADS IN COURT.

The Tichborne case was a legal cause célèbre that captivated Victorian England in the 1860s and 1870s. It concerned the claims by a man sometimes referred to as Thomas Castro or as Arthur Orton, but usually termed "the Claimant", to be the missing heir to the Tichborne baronetcy. He failed to convince the courts, was convicted of perjury and served a long prison sentence.

Engraving by Horace Harral (1817 - 1905). Harral was a prominent London wood engraver and etcher, who, with his brother, Alfred Harral, engraved numerous cuts for the “Illustrated London News” and “The Graphic”.

Illustration by George Montbard (!841 - 1905). A French illustrator and caricaturist.

From The Graphic January 27th, 1872
The Graphic was a British weekly illustrated newspaper, first published on 4 December 1869 by William Luson Thomas's company Illustrated Newspapers Limited. It continued to be published weekly under this title until 23 April 1932 and then changed title to The National Graphic between 28 April and 14 July 1932; it then ceased publication, after 3,266 issues.
